F-16 Mishap News



An engine problem that grounded most the F-16 jet fighters at Luke Air Force Base two weeks ago is being repaired by crews working around the clock, and the base says it will graduate all its fighter pilots on time.

A mechanical problem uncovered in the investigation of an F-16 crash last month near Gila Bend has forced the Air Force to ground an unspecified number of F-16s, including some used in Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea and Bosnia.
Yesterday, engine trouble forced a US pilot to land his F-16 Fighting Falcon in North Bay - Canada. Lt.-Col. Kurt Tek circled above the city for about 20 minutes before landing the jet at North Bay's airport.

Second Luke F-16 crashes this week

An F-16 (#85-1445) crashed at 09.30h at the Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field, about five miles south of Gila Bend. This is the second such crash in three days involving an F-16 from Luke Air Force Base.
A U.S. Air Force F-16CG from Hill AFB crashed today at approximately 6:30 am local time today southwest of Baghdad. The pilot, a captain with Hill Air Force Base's 388th Fighter Wing in Utah, ejected safely and was rescued within an hour by a combat search and rescue team.

F-16 crashes in Arizona, pilot survives

Yesterday in the late afternoon, an F-16 (#88-0451) based at Luke Air Force Base crashed during a training at the Barry M. Goldwater Range about 15 miles south of Gila Bend (Southern Arizona). The pilot, Captain David O'Malley, safely ejected prior to the crash.

Greek F-16 block 30 crashes, pilot safe

Yesterday, a Greek air force F-16 block 30 crashed into a field near Volos soon after takeoff on a training flight from the military base of Nea Anchialos. The pilot ejected safely.

USAF F-16 crashes in Korea on takeoff

An American F-16 crashed last night during takeoff from the Osan Air Base, Kyonggi Province, the Ministry of National Defense said. The pilot managed to eject from the plane just before the crash and was sent to nearby hospital.

Air Force investigators have determined pilot error caused two F-16CGs to collide Dec. 18, while performing a four-ship night vision goggle training mission.
A U.S. F-16 fighter fired an anti-radiation missile at a Patriot missile battery in Iraq after the battery's radar locked on the jet. No casualties were reported.
Yesterday afternoon an F-16 fighter jet crashed in the northern West Bank. The pilot, an experienced Major (Res.), reported engine trouble during a routine training flight, and ditched the plane when he was unable to get the General Electric engine back to full power.

Engine run mishap at Eielson AFB

A maintenance crew was performing a hot oil servicing run following a phase inspection in front of nosedock 7 at Eielson AFB, AK. For undetermined reason, the aircraft traveled approximately 400 feet and came to a stop on the right wingtip, right main landing gear and nose landing gear.

Air Force investigators determined that pilot error caused the collision of two F-16Cs Oct. 25, 2002, approximately 82 miles southwest of Hill Air Force Base, Utah.
