Anyone? There must be something, or has it an N-number assigned?

I believe the "X" designation was used for 2 reasons. For one, each type of airframe had to be built and flown in 3 different variations for each of the services (a first I believe). And second, both types were designed and flown using experimental STOVL technologies never tested before.

I'm not sure if this is the answer to my question, but asking about F-35 not X-35. But I'm not very familiar at this point on the F-35. How many "F-35" have been built?

Can I trouble you further? What is solid for future F-35 pre-production aircraft, just these three?
I think you're asking how many pre-production aircraft will there be? Thus far in SDD they've jig-loaded at least 12 aircraft. There will be 19 SDD aicraft total and then LRIP starts immediately thereafter.

I thought that the designation "X" was used when they're testing a plane that is completely new/could become a different type of plane altogether. Example: the X-12 was originally designed to be a fighter and turned out to be the SR-71 "prototype." On the other hand, with the yf-22 and yf-23, we knew what they would be used for. I think the "X" designation is used when they are testing a plane that could be a multirole or they don't know what it will be used for at the time.
