Hi guys,

We have two pictures of one F-16 crash:

http://www.f-16.net/f-16_photos_album30-photoabr.html
http://www.f-16.net/f-16_photos_album30-photoabs.html

The tail shows us the reg. no. 8634*. The question is obvious, which bird is this?

The problem is that within the serials range of 86340 and 86349, 3 F-16s crashed; being 86343, 86344 and 86348. 86343 is ruled out for almost 100%, because this one crashed in the Adriatic. Not much water in the direct viscinity of this picture. 86344 crashed in Turkey near Incirlik and the landscape over there doesn't realy correspond with the one on the picture. So that leaves 86348 which crashed near Hattiesburg. This could be correct.

Anyone have a confirmation on this one?

Greets,

If you can verify 348 was assigned to the Montgomery, AL Air Guard unit the tail code specifies, that pretty much settles it. The abbreviated AR doesn't list a tail number but it can be read at: http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?storyID=21903444

The story LinkF-16SimDude linked to described the cause of crash as an engine failure, that crash photo certainly looks like an engine fire to me.
According to an Air Combat Command accident investigation report released Feb. 19, the primary cause of the accident was the failure of the high-pressure turbine post, allowing the HPT blades to break free and damage the engine.

The scenery looks like Alabama too...
