"Bryan Thompson: Watch it in HD. It's better. The culmination of a lot of effort put forth by many, many people. Here's the first publicly releasable video, and the first F-35 to fire its internal gun. AF-2, The Workhorse doing it again. It's only ten rounds. Don't blink, you'll miss it...."

So much for "it won't fire from a F-35 till 2017"

Let me guess, you're of the school of "thought" that a pilot should let the whole magazine go in one shot? Just lean on the trigger and "spray and pray" until she goes *click*. Brilliant.

its called trigger control  then again I would think that the rate of fire per trigger pull is computer controlled to bursts.

Lol, I know this.
But they had to wait until 2015 before it could be done. The massive computer power and software tweaking to make this happen :)
But nevermind, its only your tax mony being spend her..

I do agree with some critics as to why not just give the F-35 the capability to use its GAU/22 from the start. Though despite what many critics and detractors think is that unlike the original F-4, the GAU/22 on the F-35 is NOT an afterthought.

Because there's more important stuff to do first?

I do also agree that there is important things to do first, but given the idea that the use of "guns" on aircraft is considered basic...
I have confidence that they will meet the deadline for the GAU/22 to be operational by 2017. Out of all the things with the F-35, the non operational gun (for now) is just an annoyance to me that gets under my skin is all. Everything else that is publicly known, I am fine with.

First observation, I think it was Gums who was told on a tour that the door gun door response was a bit slow. It seems that has been addressed, and the original rate of door operation was not operationally representative.

Second observation, the gun cycled backwards after cease fire. Goodness, definitely can't do that on any M61 I'm aware of. Purpose? Only thing I can think of is a reverse-direction gun clearing cycle. Instead of clearing the chambered unfired rounds into the return chute and lose them, the gun is clearing the unfired rounds back into the feed chute so they can still be used.

I've been told that the burst number is completely customizable, with specific mention that you could reduce it to a semi-auto (1 round "burst") if you really wanted to.

I wonder what that smaller door (below the muzzle and above the power cables, vent maybe).

It opens at 0:08 and closes at 0:15.

Dragon put it on YouTube, thanks.
