Hey everybody! Just wanted to know if any of you have ever had tech school waived after transferring to the AFRES or ANG. I just finished 8 years on active duty as an F-16 Crew Chief and transfered to the AFRES crewin' C-130J's. You think maybe they would send me to a short FTD or maybe do some seasonal training instead of shellin' out cash to send me back through tech school? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I started life out as an F-15 Crew chief, then transferred to KC-135s and had only OJT. Later I transferred again to C-130's (all ANG BTW) and I never went back to any schooling, just OJT at that new base.

Thanks wysongj, I have my first drill coming up this weekend. I'm gonna talk to the training flight and see if there's something I can do locally.

I was a turboprop guy before all engine shred outs combined and went ANG. I was waived from going to tech school but had to do the 5 level CDC's as there were different. Then my 7 level CDC's were waived as it is the same course now in maintenance.

The way money works in the ANG and RES if you prove yourself knowledgeable and they don't have a fear of a CDC failure it will most likely be waived.

We are out of money and experience is shrinking by the year so hopefully whatever organization you end up in will treat you right. Good luck.

I went from Crewing F-4's to -135's and it was all just OJT, of course this was during unit conversion so it might be different.

I was 8 1/2yr 7 level F-16 Crew Chief and separated in 1995 when my enlistment was up. Decided to come back in 3 1/2 years latter but into a AFRES unit the 927th ARW KC-135's at Selfridge ANGB Mi. Well they reduced me down to a 5 level and said I had to do my skill level time over as a 5 level and go to the 7 level Tech school since I was on fighters and not on a multi engine aircraft. I also of course had to do the 135 cross over FTD out in Spokane WA to get the fundamentals on the acft. They pulled out some AFI with a AFRES supplement and it was plainly in there. Not sure if they changed it since 1997-1999 time frame, hopefully they did cause it's stupid. All I can say I was outta there and went over to the 127th Wing (ANG) that had F-16's and they gave me back my 7 level, time etc and never looked back. But it may have changed by now but have the unit training NCO show you where in the AFI if they tell you you have to go back to a tech school for your 7 level etc. :2c:

I had to redo my 5 level CDC, when going from 2A353A to 2A551J, but that's kind of normal.

Thanks for all of the input everybody, I'll talk to the training guy when I drill this weekend. If all else fails I'll just have to suck it up and head back to Sheppard or I can go crew warthogs up at Moody.

If they are going to send you back to the schoolhouse, it's a paycheck and reserve component retirement points. Ask about a C-130 specific course at Little Rock.

This would be a good question to ask on the forums at HerkyBirds.com

They said the local policy is tech school regardless of previous aircraft maintenance experience. Butttttt.....I have a pretty cool flightchief that's workin' the system right now trying to get me to a 130J fam course up at Little Rock. I'll take that over 5 months at Sheppard any day! Either way I'll just have to suck it up! Thanks again fellas!
