Didn't the B-17 have a similar system - but they had a gun sticking out of their bubble

It looks like they were relying on the J's maneuverability,
question,
would the same tactics be as effective on less maneuverable models?

It sounds like instead of blindly flying through the danger zone they were spotting fighters close in and trying to stay low and out of the frontal nose area so they were less likely to be spotted by the radar or the pilot. Either that or they are taking advantages of some known weapon system limitations - problem is if they get spotted in either case they are still pretty much toast.

This has to be a joke?
Published on April 1st, perhaps? Imagine the ribbing at the bar: F-16 pilot sent to down C-130, comes back empty handed.
