Bird slicers on the Block 40/42 CCIP

Feel free to discuss anything here - as long as it is F-16 related.

Hey Yang,

I believe not actually. I think the only visible "thing" will be the JHMCS scope in the left side of the cockpit like the Block-50/52s.

Greetings,

Henrik.

Hey again Yang,

I have this from an earlier post by F16wedge on this forum;

MMC will bring the block 40 and 50 to the same software at M4.2, but there will still be some differences. Only the block 50 will get the IFF interrogator, will retain the APG-68 V5 radar, and smaller HUD. Block 40 MMC tape 4.1 is released now, but will only go to a few bases (Luke and Hill), and will get replaced by M4.2. With M4.2, the HTS pod gets rebuilt to R7, and will be mounted on the left chin station and will work on both block 40's (but noth block 40 D models) and block 50s. From then on, new software for the viper (OFP's) will be the same, accounting for the mentioned differences. Now that everyone can do everything, wings will still maintain a list of missions they are proficient in, but units don't have the training sorties and time to try to be master of everything.

Greetings,

Henrik.

Does anyone know why they would leave these off the 40's?

They were supposed to go on all jets but if they are in fact leaving them off the CGs I guarantee it's for $$

Doesn't make sense as the Block 30s are getting them installed.

I've also seen Block 25s with IFF installed, and although I haven't seen a Block 40 in such configuration yet, some people on this board have and I would assume that those jets would indeed receive this upgrade in front of the canopy.

Block 30s and below aren't part of CCIP...the ADF jets have AIFF from years back as said before.

You-Guys (the whole viper world !) make me laugh with this "Bird Slicer" analogy. At least they are not inside the LEF's. GD's original idea ... (sometime way before Lockheed bought the viper program) ... originally put the Beam Formed Networks (BFN's) into the lead edge flaps. And they sucked. I am no-expert at all of this anymore, but my bet is that any USAF CCIP F-16 has the AIFF "Bird Slicers" .... (aka BFN's) in front of the canopy lead edge.

So you are saying that every airframe that goes through CCIP will have the "bird slicers" aka BFN's installed?

Roscoe nailed it...and many times AD USAF and ANG/AFRES get different things because they get money from a different pot.

Nevermind what I said before. I think no CCIPed Vipers are getting IFFs too, just to keep everything standard.

Well, here is the 34th COs jet, which has definately post CCIP, and has no AIFF antennae in front of the canopy since the pic is less than a week old, and according to this:

http://www.f-16.net/news_article1953.html

The 34th is done with CCIP.

So, that answers my questions.

The Bl 50 CCIP jets have the AIFF (birdslicers).

The Bl 40 CCIP jets will not - word in the squadrons is that it is due to funding.

The Block 30's, as mentioned previously, are funded by the ANG and will get their own upgrades. They will not get CCIP, per se, but something similar. According to the Guard guys they expect to get AIFF with their CCIP-equivalent upgrade.

If anybody has further thoughts as to why the block 40/42s don't have the AIFF blades, I'd love to hear it.

I'm late to this, and it has been mentioned elsewhere, but the Block 25/30/32 jets aren't going through CCIP, they will get AIFF as part of the CUPID program.
