Are these your photos Henrik? If so any chance of getting them into the gallery. Would make good additions to update the d/b entry for 84-1393

Well...that's...um...different. :shock:

I thought you shouldn't paint the upper UHF blade antenna like that. Or am I mistaken?
Why does "monosyllabic" have 5 syllables?

Released today on USAF´s public main website:

USAF F-16C block 25 #84-1393 from the 111th FS flies with a special paint job in honor of the squadron's 90th anniversary in 2007. All the colors and markings have specific meanings, reflecting the unit's nine-decade history. [Photo by John Dibbs, via USAF]

Just as I uploaded the picture and posted it to this topic, within minutes USAF released a very interesting news article:

AFPN wrote:Colorful F-16 represents 90 years of history

11/23/2007 - AUSTIN, Texas (AFPN) -- An F-16C Fighting Falcon from the Texas Air National Guard's 111th Fighter Squadron is flying with a special paint job in honor of the squadron's 90th anniversary. All the colors and markings have specific meanings, reflecting the unit's nine-decade history.

The rudder is painted like a JN-4 Jenny, which the squadron flew in the 1920s. The schemes for the wings and flaps recall the paint schemes of the pre-World War II era.

The blue fuselage represents the Korean War, in which the squadron earned credit for two air victories. The gray underside represents the jet age.

The "N5 A" was the insignia the squadron's P-51 Mustangs sported during World War II, in which the squadron claimed 44 air victories. Also representing World War II is the star on the fuselage, while the star on the wing represents the pre-World War II era.

"Ace in the Hole" and the star on the tail replicate the markings of the squadron's F-84s during the Korean War. The ventral fin, partially obscured, reads "Est. 1917."

Today the 111th FS is part of the 147th Fighter Wing, based at Ellington Field in Houston.

Link--you can paint the antenna any color you want to as long as the paint is transparent to RF energy. Back in 2000 we painted a jet (86-0244) to look like the P-51s of our parent outfit, the 352nd Fighter Group, aka "The Blue-Nosed Bastards of Bodney" as Hermann Goering so eloquently dubbed them. There's a pic or two of it on this website somewhere.

The blue paint in no way affected the transmissivity of the radome and the FCR worked as advertised. I storngly suspect that the UHF/IFF antenna on this jet works just fine. The Thunderbirds use the same type of paint on their red radomes. We contacted them to find out whom to get our blue paint from.

The closest font I could match for some decals I'm working on is "Brush Script".

We've just published a story about the 147th at Ellington, featuring some walk around shots of the anniversary bird;
