In a previous thread, the possibility of having a Viper as a private civilian property was ruled out. However, there are MiG-15s, british military jets from the 50s and 60s etc. on private service, and I believe even a Phantom.
So, while the procurement of an F-16 may be far-fetched, could an individual with plenty of money (say that Travolta became fighter-obsessed oneday) buy jets like the Phantom or SLUF ? Stripped off from weapons systems and other military material, of course.
Not that I am interested on buying of course, but I was watching pictures of the heritage flight and I was wondering what is "allowed" and what not on old aircraft sales. |

Don't know about Phantoms, but I do know that MiG-21s are being sold on eBay all the time with prices ranging from $200k to $700K+.
UPDATE:
Just found this website which has tons of aircraft for sale, try searching here:
http://www.avitop.com/aircraft/default.asp
You can even buy a MiG-29M for $10mil or a MiG-23 for $50k! |

Yep, there's one privately owned Phantom in the air right now with another one in the works . There's also a pair of F-104 Starfighters in private hands which are very familiar to JR - just go to www.starfighters.net. I also know of a couple of KFIRs and Skyhawks over at an outfit called AFTI. Then of course, there's Bill Reesman flying the Red Bull MiG, the Fry's sponsored Patriot jet team flying L-39's, the list goes on.
Sadly, I know all too well that, "No bucks, no Buck Rogers" . |

Privately owned military jets....
Hmm there are loads.
BAE Systems operate F-100's and A-4's.
Others operate around the world:
Gloster Meteor
De Havilland Vampire
De Havilland Venom
De Havilland Sea Vixen
Hawker Hunter
Hawker Siddley Buccaneer
EE Lightning
Mig-23
Mig-21
Aero L-129
Aero L-29
Saab Draken
F-104
Sabre
Mig-15
Sea Harrier
EE Canberra
In the near future:
Avro Vulcan
Su-22 (if the CAA give up their non-afterburner rule)
In the UK there is one big rule... if it has an afterburner, its not allowed to fly in civil hands.

There is a group who purchased a Navy F-4B, and I believe they are returning it to flying status. JR dropped me the link awhile back...alas, I can't remember where it is.
There are also privately owned F-86s and T-33s (once again, JR is the resident expert here).
Base price is not usually the killer on these aircraft. The big bucks go into maintenance and fuel costs.
Beers and MiGs were made to be pounded!...(or flown at airshows? ) |

| an F-4B??? whered they get one of those from? they havent had those at amarc for decades, and the F-4Ns they do have have been stripped for parts reclaimation to the point that they couldnt possibly be restored (maybe theres exceptions). so obviously theyd have to get it from elsewhere, though id have no idea where from. either way itll be awesome to have another Phantom around. now if i could just get one to fly a show somewhere where i can actually get to it... |

| That F-100, you don't see it much. It doesn't go to air shows often. Most likely to see it at Toledo air show. I've been told that Toledo may still have some old F-100 parts laying around and ground crew who have worked on that aircraft so that is why he goes. I have a photo of it I'll post, but I've never seen it fly also. |

| i wouldnt doubt that toledo has leftover parts, ive heard from some maintenence guys that theres still some F-100 and F-4C/E parts left over here in fort wayne also, which may be why this particular F-100 is here, who knows... |
