Springfield BRAC info

This is short notice...but WHIO-TV out of Dayton is doing a report on the BRAC including the 178th FW during the 6:00 newscast today. If you read this late there will be another report Monday at 5:00. One of the reporters from the station will be attending a BRAC meeting. I'm not sure how this all works, I just know the story today is about a group that has formed trying to save area jobs. I'm not too sure what the meeting Monday is all about. I will probably post any Viper info after the report.
On a related note...there was some Springfield Viper footage on the noon newscast and they showed an aircraft wearing "178 FW" on its tail, along with the panther...but the tail flash at the top was not the red and yellow checkerboard pattern. Instead it appeared to be a solid red bar with small yellow bars on the top and bottom of it and what i would guess to be script "Ohio" written in yellow in the middle. The only pictures I can find of 178th aircraft wearing the wing's markings have the same checkered pattern as the rest of the aircraft in the unit. Any further info on this? I know the 178th's A-7s wore those markings on their tails but had never seen them before on their F-16s.

Ok well the only interesting thing that was stated was that our local representative said the 178th was "improperly stated as a combat wing" because it is actually a "training wing". Not sure how much that matters but that was that...apparently the Monday meeting is the only chance to save the jobs.

I spent a couple weeks with SPI Ohio in 94 and at that time I recall two fighters painted up with that display on the tails?? Did some training with the Weapons Guy's over there...
Hog
BTW I didn't know SPI/Ohio was on the Brac hit list also...I was with SPI/IL who's on the hit list...

That is the 'WING' jet for the 'wing king'. 87-0283 is painted a little differently since our newest commander, Col. Lohnes, has stepped up a few years ago.

Our wing king (as of Aug 2003) wanted the old style tail flash that we flew when he joined the unit. That's the story!

adamgh81,
Does Springfield ever do an open house for the local community where they invite people in to look at the jets up close, get a briefing on how the wing runs and what oppurtunities are in the gaurd and stuff like that? If not it would be a good idea to raise public awareness... That and Id just like to get up and close to those babies. I know you guys put a jet at Dayton Air Show and it was awsome.

I've never heard of an open house before, but we just had our 'Family Day' last Sunday where we have a few jets for static upclose looking and a bunch of activities for the kids. You'd have to talk to the Public Affairs office or someone like that. I'm just a traditional guy. Try to PM or email swalker490, I'm pretty sure he's our Logistics Group Commander, he'd be the top guy to talk to...Col. Walker.
Any more questions let me know.
