Also see: <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/base_closings_list" target="new" rel="follow">http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/base_closings_list</a>

Note Cannon AFB is on the list. So is Ellsworth (Not Viper related). Some Guard hits but don't remember which have Vipers anymore

Just Cannon AFB to close for F-16 units is that right?

I see Niagara Falls is losing its ANG unit, times will be tough there as I know it is a key employer.

Looks like the 177th NJ devils come out of this ok. How about the buys from Syracuse?? I'm with Willow Grove crewing A-10's and they are on the list to close!

Cannon is the only ADAF unit on the list with F-16's that I saw. Can't say I'de be sorry to see that place go. I spent my first three and a half years in the AF there working AR shop on F-111's. Loved the planes, loved the job, hated the location. Something is wrong when you have to drive through a green cloud of airborn fecal matter to get to work. Just my 2 cents.

JoeBag:
Syrause is not listed because no changes, so good news for the 138th FS.

Also keep in mind, the list needs to be approaved. For F-16 units, unless you are Cannon, things came out better then expected.

TengueNoHi

Springfield ANG base is located at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport and is on the list, but as Realign. If it isn't on the list, no changes, ie 138th FS from Syracus NY ANG.

Thanks Jon, I don't know how I missed it. I was sure I checked twice. What exactly does "realignment" mean anyways? Restructuring the orginization and stuff? Cutting loose threads that arent really useful anymore?

Thanks,

-Aaron

Here is the definition of 'Realignment' from the <a href="http://www.defenselink.mil/brac/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">DOD's BRAC website</a>:

Realignment

Includes any action that both reduces and relocates functions and civilian personnel positions, but does not include a reduction in force resulting from workload adjustments, reduced personnel or funding levels, or skill imbalances.

I see that Pope AFB (only about 30mi from home for me, and an ex-F-16 base) is going to lose 5900 military and 350 civilian personnel (and gain another 1100 military and 1100 civilians) that seems like a big loss in headcount, any ideas what changes could be in store there? Other than the airlift wing I don't know what would have nearly that many people there.

  • 944 FW to lose F-16s (11 acft to 144 FW)
  • 127 WG to retire F-16s and convert to A-10 (15 acft)
  • 366 FW to distribute its F-16s (9 acft to 169 FW, 5 acft to 57 WG, and 4 acft to backup inventory)
  • 183 FW to lose F-16s (15 acft to 122 FW)
  • 181 FW to lose F-16s (9 acft to 122 FW and 6 acft to retire)
  • 122 FW to retire current acft and gain acft from 181 FW and 183 FW
  • 177 FW to lose F-16s (3 acft to 158 FW and 12 acft to retire). Transition to F-15
  • 148 FW to retire its acft (15)
  • 119 FW to retire its acft (15)
  • 120 FW to lose F-16s (3 acft to 187 FW, 3 acft to 132 FW, 9 acft to retire)
  • 178 FW to lose F-16s (9 acft to 132 FW, 3 acft to 140 FW, 6 acft to 149 FW)
  • 147 FW to lose F-16s (15 acft to retire)
  • 419 FW to lose F-16s and associate with 388 FW (6 acft to 482 FW and 9 acft to 301 FW)

Long time lurker first post,

Viper CC,
Your post says the 181st is to lose it's F-16's, Doesn't that pretty much shut down the base at Terre Haute (HUF)?

Thanks
