Hi all,

"F-16 Runway Overrun at Oshkosh.

July 28, 2011
by Russ Niles - Editor-in-Chief.

An F-16 rolled off the end of Runway 36 at Wittman Regional Airport after landing about 11:40 a.m. Thursday. The aircraft did what appeared to be a normal landing with a high alpha rollout, but it failed to stop, and it appears the nosegear was collapsed when it hit the grass. In the accompanying photos, the engine nozzle appears to be in the fully open position during the landing roll, and a small fire can be seen in the aircraft's tailpipe after it stops. The photos were taken by AVweb intern Adam Cutler. (The airport was temporarily closed at the time of the incident.)

The aircraft in question is 87-0296.

Actually the nozzle appears to be partially, if not fully, closed and the fire may be a result of FOD ingestion. Just my :2c:

OK... I know, I know wait for the report... just for sake of conversation, other than Manual SEC, Auto Sec, Flameout above 80% or killing Batt prior to shutdown what could leave the nozzle this tight?

Looks like it was a "static" bird on arrival or departure by the loadout of bags and TP?

Not even gonna guess on the tailpipe fire.

Glad pilot walked and no one on ground was injured.

A T-33 pilot that was near by said the ECS system went haywire and smoke filed the cockpit.

Looks to me like the engine fire may have been caused by the injection of a large amount of mud?

Wow what a picture! That to me is second to the T-Bird punch out still shot. Sure there are better pictures but I only like ones where no one gets hurt!

Guess I am going with engine transferred to SEC due to multiple issues...

I'm just so glad the photos aren't showing the aircraft roll onto its back after the NLG failed and the intake did it's best John Deere imitation.

Can't tell for sure, but does #1 have his boards out on landing either? Secondly, is the first responder really an old VW Bug?

Thankful to see the pilot step out after the aircraft comes to a rest...

It appears that another AL ANG Viper did something similar the same day at their home station in Montgomery, AL!!

Anybody heard about that?!?!

His speedbrakes will do nothing for him at that slow of a speed. Right after I come off the brakes, the boards go in.

Yeah Mike, me too! A warning in the flight manual says to eject if departing a prepared surface above normal taxi speed since breakup of cockpit structure may occur.

???? They're both probably in the 80-100 knots range when the nose comes down. If the speedbrakes did no good, the flight manual wouldn't tell pilots to open them fully after the nosewheel is on the runway.

Evidently an FJ Fury (old Navy F-86) ran off the runway also and ended up in the grass near the Viper.

The FJ wasn't damaged. They don't build 'em like they used to.

Tailwind?

Apparently he landed long. I'm hearing like half way down the runway.
