So, if we are going to have such as a small number of F-22's , does that means that the F-35 will take over the role of the F-22 in terms of being the backbone of our air force, our premiere air defender?

That might be difficult with AIM-9X and AMRAAM against the latest Chinese PL-ASR and PL-13 missiles! The same will be the issue for the Partners too.

Hmmm.... Good question! I think the F-22 will be the "first line" defense backed up by F-35's (maybe we'll see the ability to carry six missiles internally moved up in priority now)! But back to your original question, my guess is that the bulk of our fighters will be F-35's and (I hate to say it) U.C.A.V.'s

How so? Not only would the J-10/11/XX, etc... have to detect the F-35 first(not going to happen), but get within their weapon's NEZ first.

No, not our "premiere air defender", but it will have to play a more significant role.

Amazing aircraft - I just completed the FAM Course at the plant at Fort Worth, all I can say is WOW...capabilities are fantastic, I loved it...once it it is in full production, all I can say is... it changes life as we know it both operationally and in the field (support wise).

Later folks - I salute the efforts of the International team in its creation and deployment

Technology Transfer issues (FMS) but I'll tell you, after the what I have seen, I wish I could "crew one"...the changes in technology almost made my head spin, I could not believe it. I will do everything but "touch it", all kinds of support other then crewing - mainly Foreign Disclosure at this point but I now want to become part of Maintenance efforts (Sustainment and Product Support globally).

I wish I could say more, but it made me feel young again and the desire to be back on the "line"...WoW

Side Note - I had to stop in here too...it had not changed a bit

Oh Man, you said it buddy, I could not believe it all, even the support systems in place and future growth, I was amazed, computer use by maintenance (right on the aircraft)...that too blew me away, I loved it and was glad to still be here (alive) to see these changes...it really made me excited to be part of it. The 16 was a real nice change (in its day) but this....WoW, felt like a movie or something but it is all real...I loved it

Have you seen it or part of it?

Meat,

I've been on the mockup and flown the simulator (not the FMS). This was over a year ago. I love the cockpit, truly Star Wars stuff. I can see why old timers are jealous of the F-22 (and future F-35) guys as they have none of the old dials or gauges to squint at or switches to activate. Literally just press a button and you got it all there, or in the F-35's case, just press that huge screen in front of you.

With the PMA, I can see you're appreciation from a CC/maintainer's point of view.

Cheers my friend.
