May 11, 2006 (by TCDzKK) - During Turkish Armed Forces Sea Lion 2006 maneuvers, TUAF F-16s got into a dog fight with Greek Mirages.
According to the eye witnesses on board of the F-490 TCG Gaziantep Frigate Greek fighter jets blocked off the Turkish helicopters and rescue planes which were conducting a search and rescue maneuvers over the international waters in Aegean Sea.
The witnesses included 18 foreign representatives from 10 countries including top brass and journalists.
In response to the incident, four F-16s took off from Izmir Cigli Turkish Air Force base to intercept the Greek Mirages.
The dogfights continued between both sides until the end of second stage of the maneuvers.
The last encounter like this happened a year ago was reported by Turkish Armed Forces on March 21, 2005.
The three-phased "Sea Lion 2006" exercises are taking place in the international waters of the Aegean Sea, between Turkey
's Karaburun peninsula on the Aegean, and the Greek islands of Lesbos and Iskiri. They involve various military and civilian sea vessels, planes and helicopters.
The exercises are aimed at developing coordination and strengthening cooperation among Turkish forces
Earlier this week, Greece
criticized Turkey's "Sea Lion-2006" search-and-rescue exercise, dismissing a Turkish announcement about the operation. He stated that Athens would be closely monitoring developments in the region.
