Environmental impact statement on placing F-35 at Nellis goes public

All interested individuals, groups and agencies can comment about the environmental impact of placing 36 F-35 Lightning II aircraft at Nellis Air Force Base. The comment period runs April 4 - May 19.
The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is being developed to supplement and eventually replace the F-16 Fighting Falcon and A-10 Thunderbolt II. Federal law and Air Force policy require the test, evaluation and weapon school training of all new aircraft.
The Air Force proposes to base 12 F-35s at Nellis for testing and an additional 24 for weapon school training, with the first one arriving in 2012 and the last in 2022.
Environmental analysis indicates the F-35 beddown will not adversely affect current airspace and aircraft operations, safety, recreation, socioeconomics, soils, water, biological resources nor cultural resources.
Public Hearings on the draft environmental impact statement are scheduled to be held at the following locations from 5 to 8 p.m.:
