“The sale of the F-16 will strengthen and modernize the defense of Romania, an allied nation along NATO's eastern flank which is also a neighboring country to Ukraine. It is an important milestone we are marking today when the first of these aircraft are delivered to Romania,” says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.

With that, Norway has begun deliveries of F-16s that have previously served with the Norwegian Air Force, and which will now be given a new lease of life in the air defense of one of our allies. Since Norway phased out the F-16 in 2021, Forsvarsmateriel has been working on the sale of 32 F-16s to Romania.

The planes will be delivered until 2025, which gives Romania time to build competence in pilots and technicians. In addition, Forsvarsmateriel will assist the Romanian defense with the transfer of experience related to the operation of the F-16.

Norway has a total of 57 F-16s which it phased out in December 2021 in connection with the introduction of the F-35. It has been agreed to sell a total of 32 aircraft to Romania, with a view to delivery in 2023 (three aircraft), 2024 and 2025.
