I was thinking along the lines of delivery of pallets through relatively any cargoplanes. I don't know if it would create blindspots and perhaps interupt flight deck operations. If it was precise enough then it should be able to drop on a helicopter deck-equipped escort, too. Pallets in the Dragonfly system range from 200 pounds to 10,000 pound pallets. Vehicles up to 40,000 pounds can be dropped, too, but that's a no go onto a deck IMHO. Technically, there is no reason it couldn't land on water for a sub rendezvous. I'm thinking the 2.5 ton range at max and using gas-electric power to hit tighter delivery windows. I'd think you would also want to see it operate in a way that the cargo is dropped away from the target then uses its own power to fly in (or loiter) before a final ingress. Either it goes to the target or the receiver goes towards it, to keep the fleet more concealed from an enemy. All sorts of options in s system like that.

CVN 78 Quietly Declared IOC in December

"NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The lead ship in the Navy’s new fleet of aircraft carriers, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), has achieved initial operational capability, the program manager revealed at Sea-Air-Space 2022 on April 5. The ship actually achieved IOC in late December of 2021, but the program did not announce it at the time, said Capt. Brian Metcalf, PMS-378 program manager.

“IOC was just recently declared and set on December of 2021 with the turnover of the last elevator,” Metcalf said. “We didn’t announce it. Some people know what IOC means and some people don’t. It’s an acquisition-specific milestone. The conditions on the ship don’t really change because of IOC. So, we did not make a public announcement on it.”

The Ford is slated for its first operational deployment this fall, Metcalf said. All 11 of the advanced weapons elevators have been turned over to the crew, he said, and a total of 17,000 individual elevator cycles have been completed.

General Atomics Wins EMALS Order For France’s Future Carrier

"The U.S. Navy awarded General Atomics an order for the development of EMALS and AAG systems for France's future aircraft carrier (known as PA-Ng).

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced on 19 August 2022 that the U.S. Navy has awarded General Atomics an $8,8 million firm-fixed-price order for the development of Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) and Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) system for France’s future aircraft carrier known as PA-Ng (Porte Avions de Nouvelle génération or next generation aircraft carrier).

The U.S. DoD contract announcement reads:

General Atomics, San Diego, California, is awarded an $8,837,078 firm-fixed-price order (N0001922F2258) against a previously issued basic ordering agreement (N0001921G0014). This order provides for the development of a two or three launch motor subsystem, two energy storage group tailored configuration of the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) and a three wire, six energy absorber subsystem Advanced Arresting Gear System configuration that are compatible with the government of France’s future aircraft carrier and provides acceptable mission capability. Work will be performed in San Diego, California (98.85%); and Tupelo, Mississippi (1.15%), and is expected to be completed in June 2023. Foreign Military Sales customer funds in the amount of $8,837,078 will be obligated at the time of award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

For the record, the United States’ State Department approved back in December 2021 a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to France of Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG), and related equipment for an estimated cost of $1.321 billion...."

Japan acquiring F-35 landing system for Izumo

“The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) is in the process of procuring a Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) for its Izumo - class helicopter carrier.

The system would allow Japan to operate Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II fighters from the ship.

In a statement on 7 February, the US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) said that the US Navy (USN), in partnership with JMSDF representatives, awarded a JPY1.13 billion (USD8.6 million) Foreign Military Sales (FMS) in December 2022 to Raytheon Intelligence & Space for the procurement and delivery of a JPALS unit.

The JPALS is scheduled to be deployed on the JMSDF's JS Izumo in 2024, NAVAIR added.”

Navy receives final JPALS unit delivery

"The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of the final Joint Precision Approach and Landing Systems (JPALS) unit March 16 marking another on-time or ahead of schedule delivery for increased capability at sea....

...JPALS is currently being deployed on all U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, and is on the United Kingdom Royal Navy’s HMS Queen Elizabeth and the Italian Navy’s ITS Cavour. Japan became the third foreign military sale customer in December and is scheduled to be deployed on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s JS Izumo in 2024.

JPALS has been supporting F-35B deployments on U.S. Navy LH-class amphibious assault ships since 2016 and F-35C deployments on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers since 2021. Initial operational capability was reached in May 2021 with full operational capability scheduled for fiscal year 2026.
