I was assigned to the 81st at Spangdahlem from 1988-1992. We were a mix of both small mouth and big mouth, approximately 50% of both. I would like to see this corrected. Here are two tail numbers that came to our unit that are big mouths. 86-0263 and 86-0270. Mine was 86-0230 (small mouth). We later combined squadrons with the 480th and became the first full F-16 squadron at Spangdahlem. We moved up the hill :( from the far end of the base and that is when the red stripe with black border top and bottom came from.
The 81TFS (Yellow) flew F-4G only in the Wild Weasel role already in the earlier 1980's. In the later 1980's their F-4G's mixed and combined with the F-4E's from 23TFS (Blue) and 480TFS (Red) in 'Hunter-Killer' couples. When F-16's came to 52TFW, they replaced the F-4E's first, because late 1990 the F-4G's were sent to Desert Storm.
