Piece of Bahraini F-16 wreckage found

October 26, 2003 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Bahraini authorities said yesterday that a piece of a missing F-16 has been found floating near Bahrain's north-western shore, more than two weeks after the aircraft disappeared from the radar screens during a night-time training.
A spokesman for the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) said the piece has been found by a citizen in the waters near a bridge that leads to the island of Muharraq.

The citizen alerted the Ministry of Interior authorities who pulled the piece out of the waters and handed it to the BDF after determining it belonged to a jet.

"A close scrutiny confirmed that the piece was part of the F-16 fighter that had crashed off in the Gulf," the spokesman said, adding that the search for the pilot and the remaining parts of the fighter jet was continuing.
