F-16 crashes in Arizona, pilot survives

June 11, 2003 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Yesterday in the late afternoon, an F-16 (#88-0451) based at Luke Air Force Base crashed during a training at the Barry M. Goldwater Range about 15 miles south of Gila Bend (Southern Arizona). The pilot, Captain David O'Malley, safely ejected prior to the crash.
The Air Force says O'Malley is in good condition at Luke Air Force Base Hospital.

O'Malley is an instructor pilot with the 310th Fighter Squadron and has more than 1,000 flying hours in the F-16. The plane was on an air-to-ground training mission and was carrying training ordnance. Officials say there is no risk to the public.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
