Two Air National Guard F-16 fighter jets collided

September 15, 1997 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Two 177FS, NJ ANG F-16 fighter jets collided off the coast of New Jersey on September 16. The accident occurred southeast of Atlantic City and involved one F-16D aircraft, with two pilots aboard, and one F-16C.
The pilot of the Charlie returned to shore safely and the two crewmembers of the other jet ejected and parachuted into the water.

One crewmember from the F-16D that fell into the ocean was picked up at about 9:15 p. m. in good shape and the second crewmember was rescued about 10 minutes later and was taken by helicopter to the Atlantic City Trauma Center where he is in stable condition with a head gash and injured hip. The sole pilot of the F-16C returned to the Atlantic City Air National Guard airport, where the planes were stationed.
