F-16s arrive at Calspan Bicycle Works
May 19, 2009 (by
Jon Somerville) -
Mojave - Four of the first five F-16s arrived at Mojave Airport/Spaceport to be operated by a private company, Calspan Bicycle Works, this month.
A fledgling company that currently has almost more F-16s then employees are hopeful for a dramatic increase in their services. Founded by Paul Nafziger, former vice president and general manager of Mojave division of BAE Systems Flight Systems, the company will focus on flight testing and rapid prototyping.
Aircraft that have been sent are older block 25s that would otherwise be sent to the bone yard in Arizona. Exact details of the aircraft involved are not confirmed but those thought to have gone to Calspan are:
#83-1129 former 309th FS
#84-1381 former 62nd FS
#85-1452 former 61st FS
The above aircraft were noted at Mojave on March 13th, 2009. Reported was that one of the aircraft came from the Vermont ANG and one had already been in storage at AMARG. Joining the F-16s will be two F-5s. The companies first project will be done for the US Navy using the aircraft to test missile defense systems on destroyers.
