Luke F-16C catches fire during takeoff
October 26, 2006 (by
Jon Somerville) -
62nd Fighter Squadron F-16C block 25 experienced a fire during takeoff at Luke AFB, Arizona but aborted before lift off. Fire crews sprayed foam on the aircraft and the pilot was treated at the scene.
Although early reports said the pilot ejected, this turned out not to be the case as images from the scene show the canopy still in place. Also a possible error was made in reporting that the aircraft took off and returned to base. This may not have occurred. At this point it is too early to tell what caused the mishap. The aircraft suspected to be the one involved is F-16C #84-1296. If it is this aircraft it is a veteran of Desert Storm in which it flew 29 missions with the 10th TFS.
The 62nd Fighter Squadron flies the older block 25s and although close to retirement it is possible the aircraft will be repaired.
