USAF F-35A #10-5015 from the 58th FS is seen at Eglin AFB after suffering an engine fire in June of 2014. The aircraft was assessed as a cat. 5 damaged one and consequently written-off. [USAF photo]
Suffered an engine fire caused by excessive rubbing of the fan blades inside the engine. Determined as a cat. 5, so writen-off.
22 Aug 2018 [ act] 11-5024 11- 5024 USAF 58 FS F-35A Details
USAF F-35A #11-5024 from the 58th FS suffered a nose landing gear failure upon landing at Eglin AFB on August 22nd, 2018 with only sustaining minor damage. [USAF photo]
Suffered a nose landing gear failure upon landing at Eglin. The aircraft was slightly damaged and flown again soon after.

The aircraft crashlanded on runway 30 at Eglin AFB at 21:26 local. The pilot ejected safely but sustained nonlife threatening injuries. The aircraft rolled, caught fire and was completely destroyed.

On final approach to landing the pilot experienced a slight rumbling to his aircraft due to wake turbulence from preceding aircraft. This air flow disturbance resulted in erroneous inputs to the air data application (ADA) of the F-35 flight control system. The erroneous inputs to the ADA resulted in a condition in which the aircraft flight controls did not respond correctly for the actual current conditions of the F-35. Recognizing that the F-35 was not responding appropriately to control inputs the pilot selected full afterburner power to attempt to recover to controlled flight. Due to the low altitude, low airspeed, and sideslip flight path of the F-35 the pilot was unable to recover the aircraft and initiated ejection. The pilot ejected before the F-35 impacted the ground and was destroyed.

The aircraft crashed at Eielson AFB at 12:49PM local time. The pilot safely parachuted out after ejecting. The pilot first experienced problems with the nose landing gear not fully retracting after take off. Trying to solve this problem the aircraft made 2 touch-and-goes, but the problem also arrose with the main landing gear. The weight on wheels sensors indicated that the plane was 'on the ground' when it was in fact airborne. Because of this indication the aircraft went in pre-programmed 'on-ground' flight control which made it uncontrolleable and subsequently crashed. The reason for the gear problems was water contaminated hydraulic fluid which froze in the sub zero temperatures.
