Michael was a friend of mine who graduated a year ahead of me at Lowell High School.

Michael ran track and was a gentle soul.

Peace my friend.

Will see you again in the Afterlife.

Mike was from one of the nicest families on the planet. I only spoke with him a few times, most of my interaction was with his Mother and younger siblings, but the few times I did speak with him were enough times to know that this man was a man of class, integrity, and he was special. The entire family is special. He is missed.

This weekend we're having the first reunion of our Gulf War unit from Torrejon, and while it won't be the same without 'Timmy' there - we know that he'll always be there with us. We miss you.

Mike was a great guy and it was a real pleasure to work with him at the 38TRS, Zweibrucken AB, GE back in the 1980s.

George Vasiloff, Jul 21, 2011 - 05:14 PM

I played basketball on the Zweibrucken base team with Mike. What a great guy.

Dennis and I felt like Mike was part of our family in Zweibrucken...sometimes it felt like he lived with us. I absolutely loved him and we were devastated to hear of his accident. I would love to get in touch with his parents...i think they were in Charlotte...I have some cute pictures of him I know they would love. He and Dennis are buried within a few feet of each other!! One day my friend...on day we will see you again.

My big brother
Gregory A. Sowell, May 15, 2013 - 10:39 AM

When I first came to the Sowell family from California state foster care, I had a difficult time adjusting to a new life, which would carry over into my academics. Michael would write letters often to me wherever he was stationed, simply encouraging me..not so much in getting better grades, but in just being myself. He always accepted me, never pointing to me the problem, but gently caring for me thru the solutions. I miss you Mike...give mom a kiss & a hug.

My 1st cousin

I flew with Mike at Zwiebrucken AB back in the 80's - Great guy who was well respected and always smiling. I am saddened to learn he moved on. The world is a bit less without you.

Hodgee
Scott Kuhlman, Feb 06, 2015 - 02:08 PM

I was stationed in TJ with Hodgee. He and Captain Joe THE SPAG. Were inseparable. During Desert Storm we had many meals together. I was a 462 who worked closely with Mike and Joe. His smile and down to earth manner was rare then and is even more so now.I know we'll meet again on the OTHER side. You are very much missed Mike. Does anybody know what took his life?

Always Remembering My Cousin
Cory E. Jefferies, Mar 26, 2020 - 04:59 PM

You were and always will remain such a special gift to our families. Your calmness under pressure, your sense of humor, your magnetic smile and integrity are some of the many things about you that has been inspirational to all of us that knew you so intimately. I remember us partying at a family reunion in Landover, Maryland when you were a young teenager like it was yesterday. We were at cousin Otis Young’s (also Air Force) house whom was the first African American Pilot for Pan American to fly round trip from New York to London and back. You took the baton at that moment, unbeknownst to us. We are so proud of you. Well done!

Mike “Hadji” Sowell…A Great American Airman
Bruce Cox, Jun 12, 2022 - 04:10 AM

Flew with Hadji at TJ, Aviano and Doha. I can honestly say Mike was the finest young officer in the entire wing. A friend to all. An inspiration in every situation. I think of Mike often. A tragic loss for our Air Force and our nation. In the troubling times of 2022, I find serenity by thinking how Mike would carry himself through these days. God bless the family and especially his parents. They raised one great American. I wish there were more Hadji’s in the world today. Blue skies…
