U.S. allies in the Middle East are expected to see significant delays in the delivery of the F-16s. Israel has already been told of a delay in the delivery of the F-16I. Egypt and Greece could also be expected to see delays over the next few months.

Arms sales to Oman

In May 2002 the US and Oman signed a $825 million foreign military sale, following a meeting between the US Defense Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, and Sultan Qaboos of Oman. The deal will include twelve F-16 fighter aircraft, and air-to-air and air-to-ground weapon systems, support and training.

Pentagon considers selling $1.1 billion worth of arms to Oman

The U.S. Defense Department plans to sell Oman $1.1 billion worth of arms, including 12 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Corp. F-16 fighter jets. It would be the first sale of F-16s to Oman, which is located at the entrance of the Persian Gulf and within striking distance of Afghanistan.

Lockheed Martin has pledged to its Middle East customers that the U.S. F-16 multi-role fighter will be delivered on schedule. Lockheed Martin has signed deals for F-16s to Egypt, Israel, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The number of F-16s exceed 200.

Egypt has accepted delivery of new U.S. F-16 warplanes ordered in 1999. The first four of 24 F-16s arrived at Gianaklis Air Base on Sunday. The F-16 order marks the sixth Egyptian program for the advanced U.S. warplane.

LMTAS is being awarded a $5, 580, 030 modification to a contract to provide for upgrade of software on 44 AN/APG-68 fire control radar systems in support of the F-16 aircraft. This effort supports foreign military sales to Egypt. Expected contract completion date is Dec. 30, 2003.

The 4,000th aircraft, an F-16C for the Egyptian Air Force, is part of the country's fifth order of Fighting Falcons. Upon completion of deliveries in its sixth order, which deliver in 2001-2002, the Egyptian Air Force will have the fourth largest fleet of F-16s in the world.
