US Air Force - AFMC F-16s

One of the more mysterious examples of F-16s. Originally #82985 was build as an F-16A block 15. It later received a C-model tail and consequently also other avionics to bring it up to the latest standards. The aircraft crashed on October 30th, 1992 in Utah. [USAF photo]

This airplane experienced a engine nozzle fail in the open position. The pilot steered it away from So. Ogden and ejected. The airplane then skidded across all four lanes of I-84.

I believe the F-16C tail was retrofitted as part of the ALQ-165 Advanced Self-Protection Jammer test program (note also antennas on the intake sides). The enlarged vertical fin base of the C was intended to house the ASPJ LRUs internally. ASPJ was cancelled by DoD and the Koreans are the only ones using it in the F-16.
