An absolutely atonishing photo. Would have liked to know how this happened to be photographed at such high resolution, and the aftermath.

Impressive picture. Just a question, since he went down show center, what happened to Mt Home? There should be 85,000 people, 100 plus aircraft and an entire base behind him. Plus, mountains, not grain elevators.

I personally KNOW this was Mt Home, I was there. The reason there is not 85,000 people in the picture is that this picture was taken from the tower looking away from the crowd. And anyone that has ever been to Mt Home, Idaho knows that there is a lot of desert there (more than mountains). All the other aircraft and people are just to the left of the shot. This was an awesome shot by Bennie, considering the plane looked REALLY close through that lens and it was headed straight for him!
If the pilot hadn't stayed in that plane as long as he did I might not be here today. I was literally only a couple hundred feet from that crash! The pilot saved a lot of lives by "landing" where he did. Thanks to all involved the worst injuries from the day were only sunburns.
The picture is at such a high resolution because it is Bennie's job to take photos, and he is very good at his job!

Was standing just 50 yds west of show center, myself. I DO know what grows around the base, go there fairly often. Directly north is Danskin Mts at about 7,500 ft and are very visable. I was more interested in aprox ac heading, as it appears to be a fair bit different from what I remember. Just trying to reconcile the background. Also, does Mt. Home have a red and white crash truck?

Yes, it is deffinately MHAFB. I remember the red crash truck...thought it was unique. Another note: There is what appears to be a line of bulder/debris just above the cars...this is actually a former runway, still some markings can be seen if your standing on it. I remember cause I flew my Debonair in for the show on a waiver. Location of the T-Bird crew cars also jives with crash video from crew.
