Italian Navy’s Cavour aircraft carrier certified for F-35B operation

"The Cavour aircraft carrier, returning to the port of Norfolk, today completed the "sea trials" for the operational use of the F-35B. Translated from an Italian Navy press release...

...The compatibility tests lasted four weeks, starting with the departure from Norfolk on 28 February and with the first landing of the F-35B on 1 March. This is a milestone in the process of acquiring the strategic capacity to use the new aircraft, which will be followed, by the end of 2024, by the “Initial Operational Capability” and subsequently the “Final Operation Capability” which will coincide with the delivery of the last F-35B to the Navy scheduled by the program.

“We have completed all the scheduled tests and at the moment we are able to issue a provisional flight permit (IFC – Interim Flight Clearance), which will allow the Cavour ship and its crew to continue training. Upon our return to Pax. River we will carefully analyze the data collected and at the end we will be able to issue the final certification,” said Ron Hess, engineer in charge of the compatibility verification team of the F-35 Patuxent River Integrated Test Force (ITF), a group of 180 people including engineers, researchers, test pilots, technicians and flight deck operators aboard the Cavour.

“Thanks to the cooperation and close collaboration with the aircraft carrier teams we were able to carry out the sea trials in a safe, effective and smooth way,” Hess added.

During the sea trials, the two F-35Bs of the Pax River ITF present on board carried out over 50 flight missions, in different weather conditions and sea conditions, a night session, about 120 vertical landings and as many short take-offs with the help of the ski jump, and single vertical take-off tests....

...The Cavour aircraft carrier will now disembark ITF personnel in the port of Norfolk, completing the necessary preparation to face the last phases of the Ready for Operations campaign."

F-35B Completes Sea Trials on Italian Carrier ITS Cavour

"The F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) has delivered a flight clearance recommendation to the Italian navy for safe operation of the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II on the aircraft carrier ITS Cavour. The short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) stealth fighter completed its four-week sea trials in the western Atlantic Ocean on 26 March, the JPO said on 26 March. The aircraft carrier is now docked at Norfolk, Virginia.

“The Cavour sea trials comprised more than 115 ski jump short take offs and 120 vertical landings, plus two vertical take offs,” says the programme office. “These activities were followed by countless hours of data analysis, which yielded information that tells US Marine Corps (USMC) and the Italian navy how to safely conduct F-35B flight operations on Cavour.”

The USMC is the lead customer and largest operator of the F-35B. The US military service is also qualified to operate its jets from the UK Royal Navy’s two Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers.

In April, flight clearance and airworthiness documents should be filed for safe launch and recovery of the F-35B aboard the Cavour, says the JPO. The F-35B will initially only operate aboard the carrier on a “limited sail-home envelope”, though the parameters of that were not detailed. Once all sea-trial test data is evaluated, the STOVL jet will receive a “full envelope recommendation”.

The F-35B is replacing the Italian navy’s McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II Plus jump jet. Italy has ordered 30 F-35Bs.

The Cavour is the flagship of the Italian navy. The 244m (800ft)-long aircraft carrier uses a ski jump to launch F-35Bs and AV-8Bs. The STOVL jets land vertically on its deck. Cavour is designed to hold an air wing of 18 to 20 aircraft."

Yes, the F-35B is capable of Vertical Takeoffs. :wink:
However in order to achieve this it can't carry full fuel and weapons load.
“Active stealth” is what the ignorant nay sayers call ECM and pretend like it’s new.

That is very useful for short range ferry. Harrier did that from Atlantic Conveyor.

"NORFOLK, Va. — The Italian navy flagship, the aircraft carrier ITS Cavour (CVH 550), departed Naval Station Norfolk April 16 after Joint Force operations with U.S. military forces in the Atlantic Ocean, the U.S. 2nd Fleet Public Affairs said in an April 21 release. ITS Cavour participated in a sequence of operations with U.S. assets and the F-35 Joint Program Office has delivered a flight clearance recommendation to the Italian navy for the safe operation of fifth generation F-35B fighter aircraft....

...An F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) test team embarked on ITS Cavour to conduct sea trials, a series of tests and functional activities to create a safe flight operating envelope for the short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing (STOVL) variant of the aircraft aboard the recently upgraded ship.

The F-35 Pax River Integrated Test Force (ITF) team from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, includes almost 200 people with the engineering and test pilot expertise and experience to conduct F-35B envelope expansion flight test, two specially instrumented developmental flight test aircraft, and support equipment.

During the sea trials, two F-35Bs of the ITF were embarked aboard Cavour and carried out more than 50 flight missions in challenging weather conditions sea states, a night session, around 120 vertical landings, 115 short takeoffs with the aid of the ski jump, and two vertical takeoffs. These activities were followed by a sufficient amount of data analysis, yielding information telling the U.S. Marine Corps & the Italian navy how to safely conduct F-35B flight operations on Cavour...."

The Italian Navy Cavour aircraft carrier has returned to Taranto this morning at the Mar Grande naval station, thus ending, after three months, the Ready for Operations (RFO) Campaign. The ship was “greeted” in the Ionian Sea by the missile destroyer Andrea Doria, the amphibious ship San Giusto and the submarine Prini.

Thanks to the RFO campaign, the Italian Navy’s flagship has successfully launched the fundamental activities in the qualification process to use the new weapon system consisting of fifth generation aircraft, the F-35 in the B version, with short take-off and landing vertical capabilities....

During the Sea Trials, carried out in the Atlantic Ocean off the East Coast of the United States, two American F-35B aircraft equipped for test activities, embarked on the Cavour, completed all the planned tests, carrying out over 50 flight missions , in different weather conditions and sea conditions, night activities, about 120 vertical landings and as many short take-offs with the help of the ski jump, as well as vertical take-off tests. The sea trial activities required an enormous commitment from the teams involved both on the flight deck and in the aircraft carrier hangar as well as in the operational premises of the Unit, from where the flight activities were managed. On board the aircraft carrier, an extraordinary integration was achieved between the Italian and American personnel, a real added value to ensure that the delicate [OH THIS IS TOO MUCH] take-off and landing activities of the F-35Bs were carried out safely, obtaining maximum effectiveness....

...Cavour also carried out certification activities on the flight deck to operate with the MV-22 “Osprey” tiltrotor operated by the Marines. The MV-22 “Osprey” aircraft is a multi-engine, dual-pilot aircraft with vertical take-off and landing capability thanks to the tilting rotors, designed for special operations support missions. The primary function of the aircraft is the amphibious assault transport of troops, equipment and supplies for naval units equipped with flight deck and ground bases. Another element added to the projection capabilities on the sea and from the sea."
