That actually compares quite favorably to an F-15E:

F-18E
Combat radius: 390 nmi (449 mi, 722 km)
Weapons Payload: 17,750 lb (8,050 kg)

F-35C
Combat radius - 670 nmi (1,241 km)
Weapons Payload - 18,000 lbs of combined internal and external weapons.

F-15E
Combat radius: 687 nmi (791 mi, 1,272 km)
Weapons & Fuel Payload - 23,000 lb (10,400 kg) of external fuel and ordnance.

Lots of dickering to be done along the lines of 'Well, the F-15E is M2.5+ while the F-35C is only M1.6+.', 'Yes, but the F-35 is stealthy and has better sensors.', etc. My point is simply the USN, with the F-35C has on deck, has an ordinance at range capability not too far from an F-15E. That's very handy, especially since the USN are usually the first to arrive.

Such data is very misleading.....The F-15 doesn't really fly at Mach 2.5+ Nor, doesn't it carry anything remotely close to 23,000 lbs under real world conditions. Actually, under most mission profiles either light or heavy. The F-35A/C out performs it...

This image shows an F-35C against a blue sky with clouds below. As the camera rotates around the aircraft what I am assuming are sensor locations are highlighted in a blue glow. There is a chevron or V shaped sensor highlighted at the front of the engine inlet. Is this a known sensor position? If so what sensor would this be?

I'll guess this is the animation - poorly executed showing the sensors BEFORE/AFTER they should become visible so that causes your perception problem I suspect? I could take a screengrab however I think the issue will become self-evident?

The screengrab was 'PrtScn' keyed at end of the animation. Is this the one? Difficult to see where it is during animation.

It is hypnotic somwotic to view that animation too much. The 'highlighted' (white lines) blue thingo STARTS at the TOP of the airframe just behind the cockpit so it is part of the DAS system. START & END FRAMES (if youse'n can get them are...).

The displayed jet is transparent wrt the position of the upper DAS sensors. Thus, when it rotates, it continues to show the position of the upper sensors, both on the nose and on the top of the fuselage.

I made a pretty poor effort at explaining myself.

The V shape that caught my is the one that sprsdlyscottsmn has pointed out to me as being the “danger - jet Intake” chevron. Why it is glowing blue I am not sure.....
