The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) is looking for a fighter to replace its F-16 fleet as it nears the end of its lifespan and is gradually decommissioned. The new RTAF commander has shown interest in the F-35.

ACM Napadej Thupatemi, who took up his post on 1 October, commented that the RTAF should think about having a better aircraft than those it presently has. If the country can maintain an adequate defense budget, he believes a stealthy fighter like the F-35A conforms to the needs of the RTAF.

Thai F-16 ADF jets have been in service since 2002, and …...............

Thailand is a major buyer of Chinese weapons. Its military frequently carries out combined drilled with the Chinese counterpart. F-35 sale to this country is a nonstarter.

What equipment??? The Thai Air Force is all Western...F-5's, F-16's, T-50's, and Gripens.

Pretty much the same for the Army and Navy. Maybe a couple of odd Russian Types. Yet, nothing significant.....

Type 071E LPD, S26T submarines, F25T frigates fitted with western systems, Anti-ship missiles, VT-4 main battle tanks, VN-1 armored personnel carriers. KaiShan-1C surface-to-air missile system. That is not insignificant.

It didn't stop the US from selling them excess Stryker ICVs, buuuut...

...the RTAF trains with that PLAAF, with the results including that Gripen vs J-11 matchup that had everyone furious. You can guess how well this is going to look on the FMS request form*

*the Pakistanis swear up and down that their F-16s have no contact with the PLAAF training visits too
