Reportedly, whole Iraqi formations turned tail when painted by the F-14's AWG-9. How much morese will that be true, when the enemy knows there are F-35's in the area? Or worse, will they even know?

Talk about un-nerving..

They won't know till their buddies start exploding.

"I never want to fight. My ideal - and this may sound
crude in civilian terms - is an assassination. I'm going to
come sneaking up on this guy and kill him before he even
knows I'm around. I'm not out there to turn and burn and do
Top Gun stuff. I'm out there to put 'em down, and I don't
want them to even know I'm around. I want a guy to be flying
along and then next thing he knows, he's hanging in his
parachute, wondering what the Hell happened. That's my idea
of a perfect day in combat. My ideal is, when he's six or
eight miles away, he just goes up in a puff of smoke, and I
just keep right on going."

FWIW, on Sunday, 2019/10/13, by local bus, I arrived at Komatsu AP, Ishikawa Prefecture, after 4 PM, so I concentrated on exploring the airport terminal, because the Ishikawa Prefectural Aviation Plaza would close at 5 PM.

The Aviation Plaza was on the far side of the airport parking lot, and across a road.

If they do procure more F-35's, they'll look back and be happy they did..

Japan at one time had the qualitative edge and in no small way. Very capable F-15's, F-2's and even upgraded F-4E's. This, vs. a Chinese fleet of largely 3rd generation Soviet built fighters. Then, the Flanker proliferation started and things went from bad to worse when more advanced Flankers and the J-20 appeared. The F-35 is going to restore that qualitative (if not quantitative) edge, and their upgraded Eagle fleet will help too.

Their own stealth fighter is plausible, but if it starts to slide they might order more F-35's and/or even F-15EX's. Wouldn't surprise me...
