Here’s how that often works — somebody with a new ‘good idea’ who wants to market said idea to somebody in a service requirements job gets permission to get a fit check of said idea and take a few pics. Next thing ya know, some publication is ‘reporting’ thru ‘sources’ (unnamed, of course) that one or more services have ‘tested’ said idea and are ‘seriously considering’ (or similar language) good idea for operational use, yada yada yada.
This ‘people pod on fast mover’ idea was never sound, but like the beltway axiom says, ‘bad ideas never die.’
Seemingly the same thing with Super Hornet CFTs...
as a fan of "fantasy" and "what if" aircraft there are "reams and reams of dreams" and as you say people don't always understand the odds of these things becoming a reality

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. these things "advance" in various ways sometimes even to a mockup stage sometimes its just "company art" the ST-21 Tomcat there is a fine looking model. Models are always neat.
but as you say, aviation publications are desperate for something interesting to write about, and far fetched company concepts are always out there.
