Thanks for the reminder John. I tremendous accomplishment -- one for the ages.

Very minor nit -- short takeoff, not vertical.

I wonder if the F-35B could actually take-off vertically, accelerate, and land supersonically on only like 7K of gas. That sounds like it would be cutting it awfully close.
Take an F-16, stir in A-7, dollop of F-117, gob of F-22, dash of F/A-18, sprinkle with AV-8B, stir well + bake. Whaddya get? F-35.

I know Turbo ended up being on the JSF program for some unreal amount of time, like 14 years? Just amazing considering how often one has to move in the military.

As those wheels touched down... all the hopes and aspirations of Monica went Boing out the window. That was surely moment that LM won the competition and the F-35 contract.

I certainly don’t have the perf charts, but F-35B VTO capability is very limited. Why? ‘Suck-down’ and the laws of physics.

Now another current link by LM prolly to the old video above with TURBO (would seem to be a great man to talk to).
Mission X Inside the Cockpit: A Pilot’s Perspective
20 Jul 2021 Art “Turbo” Tomassetti

"...The morning of the flight, as I left the briefing room to go suit up, I was walking with the government chief engineer, who was on his way to the control room. He looked at me and said, “Hey Turbo, you’re not your usual joking, happy-go-lucky self.” I said, “This is a big deal. This is Mission X—a lot is riding on this.” He paused, nodded his head, looked at me with a grin on his face and said, “Just remember one thing: they taught monkeys how to fly rocket ships.” It made me smile and put everything back into perspective: I’ve been trained to do this and it’s going to be okay.

Once I was in the jet with the canopy closed and headed out to the runway, it was all business. We had a sequence of steps to accomplish and we had to be efficient because we were trying to get everything accomplished in this one flight with a single tank of gas. I was completely focused, trying to perfectly execute everything I did....

...After completing the roughly 40-minute flight profile, it was time to execute the final feat: the vertical landing. I am pretty positive I actually had to breathe during that time but I don’t remember breathing until I landed.

When the wheels touched down, I took a really deep breath and thought, “Wow, we did it. We just did something huge.”...""

Did the X-35B tank during the Mission X flight?

This older footage seems to suggest it did:

Our hero TURBO said: "...We had a sequence of steps to accomplish and we had to be efficient because we were trying to get everything accomplished in this one flight with a single tank of gas..." while the LM video could have added the boom tanking in error? One would have to research more text about this 'hat trick' flight I guess.

Tanking NOT seen in this recent twitter video from LM: https://twitter.com/aviation_report/sta ... CID=MY01SV

TURBO tells the story of the Mission X flight in good detail with no mention of Aerial Refuelling but TIGHT it all was:

I concur. I saw no mention of tanking by Turbo, but the video posted on Youtube appears to be an older Lockheed Martin produced video, clearly titled "Mission X." Odd that some tanking footage was included. A quick perusal of LM videos on Youtube does not show this video, however.

Once again we have an issue that Youtube Videos TROUNCE reality much like PHOTOshopped JPBs trump the truth. <sigh>

Thanks, I know perfectly well it's STOVL, just a brain fart. I woke up in the middle of the night and realized my mistake.
Supersonic landing might be a little challenging.

Ooofda! You got me there!

Vertical t/o, accelerate to supersonic, then vertical landing on 7k gas? Maybe, barely. Pure conjecture. IF the landing is not in the same place.
