But hey, at least it will be 20 years before China has a stealth fighter.

You're right, my mistake. The dangers of posting when you first wake up in the morning. Cheney was VP at the time, I guess the old soggy wad of bacon upstairs crossed a few wires. Thanks for the correction.

It's like Cheney and Gates were having a contest to see who could be worse than McNamara.

Considering you can get two F-35A's for the price of one F-22 Raptor and its high cost per flight hour, capping the Raptor fleet at sub 200 aircraft was the right call.

I agree... to an extent.

The right number of F-22's is debatable, but is almost certainly more than 187/195 sometimes reported. The 330 or so figure would have been a more meaningful compromise, then pivot to the F-35. The bottom line is that we don't have enough F-22's to fight a 2 front war, and we're seeing now why thats a lot more likely than originally thought.

But what's done is done, and can't be undone. I just hope USAF/USN leadership learns from their past mistakes. Because if we lose the next war, they might not have that luxury agan..

If we had built 500+, you wouldn't be able to buy 2 F-35s for the price of 1 F-22. They'd already gotten down to ~$140 million by the last Lot. A 500+ buy would've gotten the price down considerably.

We'll never know how low the cost of an F-22 would have gone if we built 300 or even 500. The simple fact is that an abysmal procurement of 187 units was a bad idea. Buying small never helps in the long run which is what most people should look at. We should keep the F-22 as long as we can until the NGAD fighter becomes OIC or even FOC. Retiring the F-22 early will be as dumb as capping it at 187.
