Cytec awarded contract to produce advanced materials for F-35 and F-22 through 2013

February 22, 2006 (by Jeff Hollenbeck) - Lockheed Martin has awarded Cytec Engineered Materials a contract worth up to $750 million to supply advanced materials to be used in the construction of the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter through 2013.

The carbon fiber-skinned wing for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter slots into place as observers look on at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 16. The joining of the wing to the fuselage marked the start of final assembly for the first F-35 aircraft. [LMTAS photo ]

Some of the materials to be supplied under the contract are CYCOM(R), a prepreg which withstands high temperatures, CYCOM(R) 977-3, a tough epoxy material and thermoplastics which will help protect the aircraft from impacts and damage during combat.

The F-22 Raptor is slated to replace the F-15 Eagle in the United States Air Force while the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is scheduled to serve in many different Air Forces around the world including the USAF.
