Pentagon announces BRAC list - Cannon AFB to close

May 13, 2005 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Today the Pentagon released the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) report which contains the plans for major cutbacks at selected bases around the USA. One of the major F-16 bases to be impacted is Cannon AFB in New Mexico, which will close.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfelds recommendations will now go to a nine-member Base Realignment and Closure Commission, which will hold a series of hearings before coming up with its own list on September 8th.

President Bush then has two weeks to approve or disapprove the BRAC recommendations.

If the president rejects the list, it goes back to the commission for revision. If he accepts it, the list becomes final within 45 days, unless Congress passes a joint resolution to block the entire package.
