Thai F-16s stationed at Bangkok airport for security operation

October 6, 2003 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Leaders of the 21 member countries of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum will meet in the Thai capital on October 20-21, prompting Thailand's biggest ever security operation.
From Wednesday on, Thailand's air force will roll out massive security around Bangkok's international airport with nearly 1,300 officers to be deployed around the airport.

Eight F-16s will also be stationed on the tarmac to protect the leaders' aircraft.

Besides the Fightoing Falcons, the air force will also set up tanks, road barriers, infrared fences and a closed-circuit TV system, while commandos will be on 24-hour standby.

Security surrounding Bangkok airport has come under scrutiny in recent weeks with several scares, including reports that surface-to-air missiles (SAM) smuggled into Thailand from Cambodia were being hunted by authorities.
