Greek F-16 crashes - Pilot killed
November 12, 2000 (by
Lieven Dewitte) -
The pilot of a Greek F-16 block 30 was killed on Monday after a crash in the Pagasitic Gulf near Volos.
Lieutenant Konstantinos Kakkavas, 30 years old, had more than 550 flight hours. He crashed during a training mission and did not have the time to use his ejection seat.
A first investigation pointed out that the pilot was either unconscious or engaged in a maneuver during which he confused the air with the sea.
The jet took off from the military base Nea Aghialos, close to Volos, for an exercise.
