LMTAS & USAF test LANTIRN 2000

March 10, 1998 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Lockheed Martin Electronics and Missiles, along with the US Air Force, will complete flight testing later this year of an initial design of the LANTIRN2000 targeting pod that will significantly extend its operational range.
The new LANTIRN offers 60 percent extended target detection, recognition and engagement ranges, a 3rd generation FLIR Sensor and a diode-pumped laser capable of operating above 40, 000ft.

If the design proves successful, production will start in 1999. Lockheed Martin hopes the LANTIRN 2000 will fill the requirement for the US Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve for 144 target pods for their F-16 block 25, 30, and 32 fleet.

Two undisclosed foreign customers have also shown interest in the LANTIRN 2000.
