440th Airlift Wing Moves to Pope AFB

After more than 50 years in Milwaukee the 440th Airlift Wing officially moved back to Pope AFB in North Carolina.
Most reserve personnel will not follow the Wing to North Carolina. The decision came about a few years earlier during the Base Realignment and Closure report produced in 2005. By 2011, the US Army is slated to completely take over Pope AFB.
The new tail band adorned on the 440th AW aircraft will state “Bragg-Pope” with one aircraft already painted as such for the ceremony held on June 10th. Pope AFB is where the 440th AW started 63 years earlier. All the aircraft are expected to be on station at Pope by the fall of 2007.
Active duty personnel will mostly be flying and maintaining the aircraft but the wing will still remain an Air Force Reserve unit. This is the opposite of the typical associate plan the USAF came up with where reserve and ANG work with the active duty crew and aircraft.
