Chile to decide on warplane purchase end-May

May 3, 1998 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Chilean authorities will make a decision at the end of this month on which aircraft to buy to renew the Air Force's aging fleet.
Chile is choosing between the Swedish JAS 39 Grippen, the French Mirage2000-5 made by Dassault, the F-18 made by McDonnell Douglas, and Lockheed Martin's F-16. Chile wants to buy about 16 aircraft, the equivalent of a squadron, all of the same model, and plans to spend about $600 million.
