June 17, 1998 (by
Lieven Dewitte) -
Six Turkish F-16s landed in northern Cyprus on Thursday. Ankara said the visit was in response to a stopover this week of Greek aircraft at a military base in the south of the island.
The F-16s landed at a military base in Lefkoniko in northern Cyprus around midday and three later left.
Greek Cypriot military officials saide arlier the incident would be reported to the United Nations, which maintains a peacekeeping force on the divided island. Ethnic Greeks and Turks of Cyprus have been estranged since Turkey invaded its northern third in 1974 after a brief Greek-inspired coup.
