Air Guard's 115th receives Outstanding Unit Award

February 4, 2007 (by Lieven Dewitte) - The Air National Guard's 115th Fighter Wing received the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Unit Award in a ceremony on Saturday.

Dedicated to excellence

For the fifth time in the last 26 years, this honor given for exceptionally meritorious service is bestowed upon the Wisconsin-based unit.

It is the crown jewel in a year in which the unit is also receiving the Winston P. Wilson Trophy as the outstanding Air National Guard fighter unit, the Maj. Gen. John J. Pesch Flight Safety Award and the William W. Spruance Safety Award.

"The 115th Fighter Wing has a proud history of excellence," said Brig. Gen. Jerry Olesen, Wisconsin's Deputy Adjutant General for Air. "The men and women of the 115th Fighter Wing have stepped up to almost every major contingency around the globe where our nation's Air Force has fighter operations and have performed extraordinarily."

Since the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, the 115th has been part of Operation Noble Eagle, the 24-hour security mission to protect American air space. Elements of the unit also have been deployed to Iraq and other spots in the Middle East, both in the current war and in the Gulf War of 1991.

There are 1,100 members of the 115th and each will be entitled to wear the latest award, a ribbon of alternating broad and narrow red, white and blue stripes. Those who were in the unit when it received previous awards will add a metallic oak leaf cluster to their ribbons.
