A Taiwanese citizen was charged Thursday with being a covert agent for Beijing, and accused together with a Frenchmen of trying to illegally export an F-16 jet engine, Blackhawk helicopter engines and cruise missiles to China.
Ko-Suen "Bill" Moo, of Taipei, was also accused in the indictment of being a covert Chinese agent and attempting to pay a $500,000 bribe to gain release from U.S. custody. He has been held since November and has pleaded not guilty to the illegal export charges.
Prosecutors in Miami said a federal grand jury had returned a nine-count indictment against Ko-Suen Moo, of Taipei, and Maurice Serge Voros, of Paris.
Moo had been detained but Voros remained at large, prosecutors said.
According to the indictment, Moo traveled to the United States on two occasions and actually inspected an F-16 aircraft engine. The engine was to be flown to an airstrip in China.
He also deposited $3.9 million in a Swiss bank account to pay for weaponry after he allegedly met with people he thought could arrange the sale. They were in fact undercover U.S. agents.
