Czech Republic and Hungary: no new Fighters

September 30, 1998 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Both the Czech Republic and Hungary have officially announced that they cannot afford new fighter aircraft.
The Czech Republic was going to buy 24to 36 new fighters to replace its aging inventory of MiG-23 and MiG-21aircraft by 2003, but there simply isn't enough money. Instead, the airforce will rely on light L-159(T) aircraft to fill the gap.

Hungary has also announce it does not have the funds to buy new aircraft. It is considering extending the service life of its MiG-29s, leasing aircraft, or purchasing light aircraft such as the L-159.
