ROCAF F-16B swerves of runway in Chia Yi, crew safe
June 25, 2005 (by
Lieven Dewitte) -
A Taiwanese F-16 jet fighter veered off the runway while landing at the Chia Yi Air Base in southern Taiwan Friday. No one was hurt but the airport, which is shared by civilian airplanes, was forced to close for a while.
The twin-seat F-16B block 20 was returning from a regular training sortie over the ocea at 10: 12 a.m. when it ran off the runway after taxiing about 4,000 feet on the tarmac.
The jet (Serial No. 93-0833) belongs to the 455th Tactical Fighter Wing.
The Air Force commander on the base ordered the jet fighter towed away from the runway and the airport closed during the towing operation, a normal procedure, although the pilot and the plane were fine.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
