Dutch consider deploying F-16s to Afghanistan

August 13, 2004 (by Lieven Dewitte) - The Netherlands is giving "serious consideration" to a NATO request to supply F16 fighter jets to help patrol the skies over Afghanistan during the upcoming election, government ministers said in a letter to Parliament on Thursday.
Last week, a group of experts returned from Manas, Kyrgyzstan, where they examined the possibility of using the local military airfield Ganci as a base for the F-16s.

Dutch F-16s were based at Ganci in 2002 and 2003 as part of its contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Because of financial constraints, their participation in operation Enduring Freedom was ended on October 1st 2003.
