Naval Air Station Lemoore hosts Fresno F-16 fighters

July 9, 2004 (by Lieven Dewitte) - On July 6th, two F-16s landed at Naval Air Station Lemoore with more following later. The F-16s belong to the Fresno's 144th Fighter Wing of the California Air National Guard.
As an example of the Navy and Air Force providing joint usage of a facility, they have taken up temporary roost among the Navy's Hornets.

The Air Force jets are spending a few months with the Navy while runways are being repaired at their home base - the Fresno-Yosemite International Airport.

The F-16s are part of the North American Aerospace Defense Command assigned as homeland security, a duty the system has been providing for over 50 years. The Fresno unit helps secure the southwestern United States . A total of 18 aircraft are permanently assigned them the wing.

Along with the jets at NASL there are pilots and support staff in temporary trailers next to the planes assuring that they can scramble at a moment's notice when called upon.

Some of the services these fighters can provide include combat air patrol and the interception of questionable aircraft coming into the area.
