Played with everything in the AF inventory as senior aircraft inspector Air Combat Command Inspector General Team

Current or Favourite assignment

The 428th Fighter Squardron was the F-111 training squadron for the Air Force. It consisted of 25 F-111G aircraft. These were former FB-111 aircraft from the Strategic Air Command cobbled together with a tactical bombing system. The aircraft was AMP'd prior to coming to Cannon, so the aircraft was incredibly reliable. The best thing about the unit were the people, from the squadron command on down. For me it was the highlight of my career as these were the BEST people to be assigned with. Ninty percent of my senior NCOs went on to be CMSgts and they ran the tautest ship as "Buccaneers".

Deployments

My first deployment was with the 33d TFW "Nomads". At that time there was only one squadron assigned to the wing, that being the 58th TFS with it's infamous "monkey pissing in the snow" patch. That six month deployment took 'em to Operation Linebacker I stationed at Udorn RTAFB, Thailand. The unit lost a couple of aircraft, but no Nomad pilots were flying 'em at the time. Capt Richie also made four of his five kills in 58 TFS aircraft. I was there the day he made his double kill in one of our birds. One of our pilots, Capt McKinley, I believe, killed a MiG-21 with the 20mm after an AIM-4 and AIM-7 malfunction. I quickly learned how to hang over ten sets of external tanks per shifts as our aircraft were used as MIGCAP most of the time. It was some TDY!
